Competition Heats Up at Auction
Napa Valley
Online Bidders from Around the World?
NAPA—Doors to Napa Valley's most exclusive event are swinging
open to the world. For the first time, bidders for many of the
luxury items, events and bottles of rare and collectible wine
will be able to log-in and bid on items online.
More than
60 special E-Auction items will go live on May 19, where anyone can begin the
bidding via the Internet. E-Auction lots include a 5-liter bottle of Heidi
Barrett's Amuse Bouche, a Hawaiian luau in Napa, a decade's worth
of Stag's Leap Syrah and much more.
Bidding will
continue through June 2, the date of the auction, when real-time bidders
at the auction will get involved at special digital kiosks located
throughout the auction—no doubt making for some interesting competition.
The bidding will close that evening, with the highest bids winning
out.
Tradition
lives on, however. Live bidding and barrel lots are not included in the
E-Auction. The live auction takes place Saturday, June 3, and
is usually one of the most-talked about events of the year. Prime
lots can go for thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of
dollars. Competition for many of these rare events and bottles
often gets intense as wealthy buyers from Napa and around the globe compete
to win.
The auction
raises millions of dollars for local charities, and since its inception
in 1981, has contributed more than $61 million to children's
health, housing and other charities in the Napa Valley.

Tickets for Auction Napa Valley are in high demand, and often sell out. If you're
interested in attending, the full package (June 1-4) runs a sweat-inducing $7,500.
