Piccolino's gives guests a feeling of dining out with style
Napa News, Friday, August 6, 2004
With its big windows looking onto First Street, Piccolino's Italian Café has been a high-visibility presence in downtown Napa for the better part of a decade. The interior is expansive and bright, with apricot walls and a mural strip of an Italian village that add a festive touch. Views through an arched passageway unite the main dining room with the bar, which borders an outdoor dining patio. The place had a definite energy. Our table had a white linen tablecloth and a votive candle that twinkled in the early twilight.
As soon as we were seated, a fresh-baked small loaf of bread appeared. We poured olive oil from a heart-shaped bottle that doubled as a dining ornament. The food arrived on large plates of colorful country crockery. Piccolino's gets high marks for presentation. Freshly grated parmesan was offered. My companion loved the pesto fettuccine, which struck wonderful high notes. She considered it one of the best pesto dishes she had ever eaten. My fettuccine Calabrese was a most interesting, complex dish, taking my taste buds on a wild ride. I thought I had ordered well. Service was attentive, but not smothering. All our needs were courteously met.
When it came time for the bill, we felt we had eaten out in style, but at a non-exorbitant price. It was pleasing to dine in serenity with the Chefs Market in view. Having our own live entertainment inside the restaurant was a big plus. I sensed a strong mix of locals and tourists at Piccolino's. Those from out of town who just happened to find this place are probably congratulating themselves on their good fortune.
