During a visit to the Carneros region in the 1970's, Claude Taittinger recognized the area's potential to produce world-class sparkling wine and pinot noir and dreamed of one day building an American winery. That dream came true in 1987. Along with the parcel purchased in the heart of Carneros, he also selected Eileen Crane to oversee the planning and development of the property, as the winery’s first and only winemaker. CEO/Founding Winemaker Eileen Crane has been at the helm of Domaine Carneros since the first harvest and continues to oversee and direct winemaking and operational duties. Domaine Carneros specializes in ultra-premium sparkling wine and pinot noir. All of our wines are produced using traditional French methods. Our sparkling wines are made in the methode champenoise or aged in the bottle. Our pinot noirs are made in the age-old Burgundian fashion using small, open-topped vats. Firmly committed to excellence, Domaine Carneros stands alone as the only sparkling wine producer to exclusively use Carneros grapes. The long, moderately cool growing season, tempered by the maritime breezes and lingering fog from the San Pablo Bay provides optimal growing conditions for pinot noir and chardonnay, the two primary grape varieties used in making Domaine Carneros sparkling wine.
